I’ve long since abandoned this blog, but I figure I’d make one last post to announce that my pet project, MajorIndulgence, has now launched into beta! What is it? It’s a networking site targeting college majors. There’s message boards, news, wiki, a marketplace, jobs section, etc. Come check it out, especially if you’re a student. Oh, and I just launched it yesterday late afternoon, so traffic so far is pretty much non-existant, and I still have to do a lot of search engine optimization as well. But I’m happy with the way it’s looking so far.

Why do film scripts have such bad formatting?

So Warner Bros posted ‘The Dark Knight’ script online as a PDF as a promo for the upcoming Oscars. But glancing over it, I noticed that the formatting is terrible. Are all scripts formatted like this? The font style is difficult to read, there’s no hierarchy of text, no color labeling. As a designer, I’m a little surprised that it looks so….amateur.

Lynda takes the stress out of learning

What a great set of learning videos. I’ve always like Lynda, and now I’m learning Dreamweaver CS3 with it. Lynda has tutorials on all the Adobe applications and takes you through them from zero experience all the way up to expert level. I highly recommended learning via Lynda first, and then referencing books.

Another film about depression in suburbia

I smell Oscar. Sam Mendes is directing Revolutionary Road, a film about a couple struggling to live in suburbia. I love these types of films. Mendes previously directed American Beauty, which was great. And Little Children, directed by Todd Field, was great as well. In fact I can’t think of a film set in suburbia that wasn’t at least “good.” And they all have one central consensus: suburbia sucks the life out of you, it’s boring, your dreams are dashed, all hope is lost, etc. And it’s true. I’ve never lived in suburbia before, but growing up I visited these areas quite often and they are depressingly inactive. I could stand outside in the middle of the road and 15 minutes would pass before I even see a car pass by. Since seeing Vanilla Sky, it reminded me of the opening scene where Tom Cruise’s character realizes that no one is in Times Square, and then starts to run. It makes me feel better about my living conditions. I may live in a ~460sqft studio apartment, but it’s surrounded by city and lots of activity, and I enjoy the little traffic noises when I leave my window open.

Crazy lady in ‘Jesus Camp’ film

WTF??? Bill Maher is right. Religion is quite religulous. ‘Jesus Camp’ is a film about a group of kids who go to a camp where this lady preaches to kids about God and crap. It’s unbelievable how brain-washed these kids are. It made me sad just watching some of the things these people say, like how swearing is a sin. And how there are only two kinds of people: (1) those who let God into their lives, and (2) those who don’t. Well after this film, looks like it only confirms that I’m definitely the latter.

Left 4 Dead is crazy havoc fun!

Wow, the demo of this PC game was recently released, and it’s quite a ride. Hordes of zombies run and attack you, while 4 players try to kill them off. The co-op feels right, and there’s a sense of team during gameplay. Love it, although the controls don’t seem to be as responsive as Half-Life 2. Still, if your system can handle it, download the demo from Steam and shoot away.

Law&Order lawyers are so not lawyers

Now I know TV shows are all fake, and I like my Law&Order, but these lawyers are getting increasingly attractive over time. I mean, when was the last time you ever saw a female lawyer look like this? Never, because women who are 5’10″, slender, and exotic looking are all actresses and models. They don’t want to argue for a living and read through pages of crap, and defend people who they don’t like.

Animation: Blizzard vs Pixar?

We all know about Pixar and their animated films, and we all applaud the detailed and fluid animations, from the characters to the landscape and various objects. But after going through a couple of Blizzard cinematic intros of StarCraft II and Diablo III, I couldn’t help but notice that both animation houses are equally great. I can’t favor one over the other!

Almost all reality shows are mind-numbingly dumb and feature some crap ass contestants. But at least NBC’s The Biggest Loser has a deeper point to make other than making money. Face it, America is a nation filled with fatasses. This show promotes good health, diet and exercise. And for those reasons, that show should be allowed to exist. OK I’m done.

When I think Veteran’s Day, I think MGS3

That’s right. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the PlayStation 2. It’s one of the best games ever created, with a fantastic military-based story line, and a great soundtrack as well. For those who haven’t played the game, The Boss sacrifices herself for her country and Snake salutes her at her grave site during the game’s ending sequence. Ah damn, just thinking about it makes me want to cry! Also, the song “Debriefing” by Harry Gregson-Williams is the PERFECT song for Veteran’s Day. It should be the official song. It’s that great. Especially starting at around 2:49, there’s this build-up that gives me chills every time.

Wow, how did I miss this movie?!

One of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen! EVER. It’s a comedy about two people who are frozen and then thawed out 500 years later, only to find out that the human race hasn’t become more advanced, but rather degraded back to the Stone Age with morons everywhere. The humor is top notch, and both Luke Wilson and Mya Rudolph are great in it. It’s unbelievable that I managed to overlook this movie. It was in limited release and only made about $500K total, but it’s easily better than 90% of all the comedies out there. SEE IT if you haven’t already.

Old guy, house, and balloons. From what little the trailer shows, it looks like it’s going to be an adventure where this old guy travels around the world and meets new people. You can read some more info at its wikipedia page. I’m not sure how this John McCain character is going to attract small children, but either way it’s Pixar, so it must be good right? So far they’ve had a perfect track record, with the possible exception of Cars.

Palin is the scapegoat!

Well now that McCain has lost, the GOP is needs a scapegoat for their failures, and Palin is the perfect target! This is just what I figured the GOP would do. Pick a “clean slate” from the Republican pool and mold a woman that would appeal to America’s dumbest, most ignorant crowd. And when it didn’t work out for them, they throw this woman under the bus and bury her. It’s the GOP’s fault for picking her, and her fault for accepting knowing full well on the inside that she isn’t qualified for the role of VP. Not knowing that Africa is a continent? Not knowing the three main countries that make up North America? Not knowing what NAFTA is? Sure, there’s plenty of dumbasses in America, but at least they’re not trying to run for national office. I hope this woman never returns back to the lower 48. And I hope that her image is smeared beyond repair that she never tries to run in 2012 or 2016. “Country First” my ass McCain. If this country means so much to you, you would’ve never picked someone as ignorant as this bitch. Obama, YES WE DID!

Finding a business partner like finding love.

I’ve been working on a project for several months now, and I’m up to the point where I need to find a business partner to help me complete the project because I don’t have the particular skills to carry it any further, nor would it be worth my time to learn those skills. The trouble is, finding a great business partner is very, very difficult. I mean that person needs to believe in my idea just as much as I do, needs to have the complementary skills that I’m looking for, and have the ambition and commitment to venture into something that might ultimately fail. But large investments (whether it’s time or money) without any gain is the risk that I, like many entrepreneurs, are willing to risk. It’s just hard to find someone else that shares the same sentiment and believes in the idea.
