Another film about depression in suburbia

Revolutionary RoadI smell Oscar. Sam Mendes is directing Revolutionary Road, a film about a couple struggling to live in suburbia. I love these types of films. Mendes previously directed American Beauty, which was great. And Little Children, directed by Todd Field, was great as well. In fact I can’t think of a film set in suburbia that wasn’t at least “good.” And they all have one central consensus: suburbia sucks the life out of you, it’s boring, your dreams are dashed, all hope is lost, etc. And it’s true. I’ve never lived in suburbia before, but growing up I visited these areas quite often and they are depressingly inactive. I could stand outside in the middle of the road and 15 minutes would pass before I even see a car pass by. Since seeing Vanilla Sky, it reminded me of the opening scene where Tom Cruise’s character realizes that no one is in Times Square, and then starts to run. It makes me feel better about my living conditions. I may live in a ~460sqft studio apartment, but it’s surrounded by city and lots of activity, and I enjoy the little traffic noises when I leave my window open.
