Everytime Apple decides to air a new commercial for an iPod, there’s always some quirky song that plays, and so far they’ve been all songs that I’ve never heard. In the newest iPod Nano 4th generation commercial, the song Bruises by Chairlift plays. Download it here. On another note, Apple really knows how to milk their products. They have a 75% share in the portable music industry, an advertising campaign that is highly memorable, and the image of hipness and coolness with its design. I have a 2nd generation Nano, and except for the video features, it’s the same iPod Nano two generations later.

You point out the longevity of the iPod design. That’s a result of design excellence. Apple took a page from, and worked with, BMW, another manufacturer whose designs are the same from year to year, and for good reason. Aside from being the result of excellent design, longevity in design increases the value of the product. Older ones look current and don’t “date” the product, leaving a longer visual / industrial design life-span and a higher value associated with all models, including the older ones. The design changes in response to technical advancements or user issues. This is genuine excellence in product design, through and through. It’s why Apple wins.
